AARP and the United Nations Programme on Ageing, in cooperation with the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), organized a series of briefings from 5 to 7 February 2008. These events marked the conclusion of the five year review of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing, adopted by the UN Second World Assembly on Ageing in 2002. On this occasion, the UN Commission for Social Development devoted several days to the final review process of the main trends and policy directions that have occurred in this area since the Madrid World Assembly.
To inform the discussion and to provide the background to some of the major trends, AARP worked with UNDESA to convene three luncheon briefings, which brought together government delegates, NGOs, foundations, and academics to discuss the themes of the Madrid Plan of Action on Ageing, as well as the theme of the 2008 UN Commission for Social Development. The meetings were held in the United Nations Delegates Dining Room at the UN Headquarters in New York City,
As the theme of the 2008 UN Commission for Social Development is “Promoting full employment and decent work for all,” the 2008 briefing series also focused on the implications and importance of decent work for aging populations.
