The Zimmers, a group of 40 British seniors with a combined age of over 3,000 years, have come together to share their talents with all generations. Their extraordinary cover of The Who's well-known My Generation has become a worldwide media sensation.
Practically overnight, the video of My Generation became a cult hit on the Internet, where it has been viewed more than 3.4 million times on the video-sharing site, YouTube. The Zimmers even have their own MySpace page. On June 2, 2007, the "My Generation" single made it to #26 on the British singles pop chart. And this is just the beginning.
The band was first formed as part of a BBC television documentary about the feelings of isolation and neglect felt by Britain's older population. Documentary filmmaker Tim Samuels traveled throughout Britain investigating the marginalization of older adults as part of the BBC's Power to the People series. Finding lonely and isolated older adults in care homes and towerblocks, Samuels recruited them to make their voices heard in a new and unique way.
"I wanted to do something to help them fight back; something with a little bit of attitude and chutzpah," says Samuels, "...what better way than try and break them into the pop charts?"
The next step was finding some music industry figures to lend their support. Mike Hedges, producer to U2, Dido and The Cure agreed to produce the single while the video was filmed by Band Aid video director Geoff Wonfor and finally, recorded in none other than the legendary studio at Abbey Road.
The result was a different kind of rock band; a group of fun, lively and endearing older adults, whose instant popularity is no surprise. From 99-year-old Winnifred to 100-year-old Buster, they have charm, energy, and a message that people understand.
Says the 90-year-old lead singer, Alf, "I can't believe this is happening. For me to have recorded a song in the same studio as the Beatles is just so exciting...I feel alive again."
The 40-member group takes its name from the Zimmer frame-a British term for walking frames.
The enormous popularity of the group has led to the creation of a small record label, through which the Zimmers will next be working toward recording an album.
All profits go to Age Related Charities.
