As societies around the world age, there is a growing awareness of the need to adapt our communities, especially cities, to be more age-friendly. For communities to be livable and age-friendly, they must be safe, sustainable, and affordable.
On June 30, AARP hosted a half-day seminar exploring how we can build livable communities for the future. Distinguished speakers discussed how road safety in urban environments can improve the quality of life for all residents (Session I) and how urban planners and policy makers around the world are devising affordable and sustainable projects to make their communities more age-friendly (Session II). John Beard, Director of the Department of Ageing and Life Course at the World Health Organization delivered the keynote on the WHO's Age-Friendly Cities Initiative. More than 110 representatives from government, NGOs, academia, business, and the diplomatic community attended.
This event was hosted in connection with the release of the Summer 2010 edition of AARP's international policy publication, The Journal, which spotlights perspectives on livable community issues from around the world. Visit: journal.aarpinternational.org
