What are the key trends, challenges and opportunities that will drive the health care policy agenda in the short and long term?
What strategic considerations will guide the development and deployment of next generation health care models in the United States and around the world?
Posed against a backdrop of relentlessly rising costs and increasing concerns regarding access and quality, these are the big picture questions which must be answered as demographic shifts and emerging transnational issues begin to reshape the global health care marketplace over the next several decades. They are among the many critical questions addressed at a high-level international symposium hosted by AARP April 15-16 in Washington, DC.
Health Care '08 convened top-level international policymakers and opinion leaders for a broad, cutting-edge conversation highlighting international best practices and global trends in health care. The forum examined how different countries address the access, delivery and quality of health care and featured emerging global issues, such as health information technology, pharmaceutical policy, medical tourism, and approaches to public health. The audience for this event consisted of approximately 200 senior representatives of government, industry and the NGO community.
Feature speakers for this event included: Mary Robinson, President, Realizing Rights: The Ethical Globalization Initiative; John Bruton, European Union Ambassador to the United States; Andrew Dillon, Chief Executive of the United Kingdom's National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence; Robert Butler, President and CEO, International Longevity Center; Peter Orszag, Director, Congressional Budget Office; Elizabeth Docteur, Deputy Head, Health Division, OECD; Fran Drescher, Special Envoy for Women's Health Issues, U.S. Department of State; President, Cancer Schmancer Movement; and tennis great Martina Navratilova, who spoke on the promotion of healthy behaviors.
