Travel concessions give seniors room to move

The ACT Council on the Ageing says changes to seniors card travel concessions will be be a boon for Canberra's older citizens.

From today, concession card holders can travel at a discount on ACTION buses at any time of the day, instead of only during off-peak times.

Paul Flint from the Council on the Ageing says it will provide seniors with more flexibility.

"Under the old system, it meant that they couldn't get on the concession or if it was the afternoon one they couldn't get home," he said.

"So people tended to not go out when they probably should.

"Now, they can get the buses to meet the appointments that they have."

Mr Flint says the changes will help the elderly maintain their social networks.

"They weren't going to things they'd previously gone to because of the fact that they had to pay full fare on one of the trips," he said.

"So we see that as very important both in a social context and of course for those that were making that decision on a cost basis."
