The Future of Work for the 50+

September 29, 2021

We are living longer, healthier lives. In the future, we'll see people working well into their 70s and 80s out of necessity or desire to stay connected to the workplace. As people work longer, they will need sustained training and reskilling efforts to keep up with changes in the workplace. The elongation of working lives presents new opportunities for employers.

Over the last twenty years,  work has changed and evolved with new trends and advances in technology, redefining work for the 21st century. Flexible and on-demand work arrangements are more popular than ever. In addition, new technological advancements, such as automation, robotics, and artificial intelligence, are poised to reimagine workplaces yet again. Yet, these changes have not always provided positive results. Left unchecked and unsupported, the future workers could see their incomes fall and be left out of the changing economy.

Employers will need to adapt quickly to keep up with the evolving nature of work due to advances in technology.   Employers can prepare workers for this shift by developing resources and programming to help support workers over 50. This presents a unique opportunity for employers to tap into the institutional knowledge and experience that many older workers have that can be leveraged for long-term business growth.

To help employers navigate this change, AARP has created a new online platform full of research, resources, and insights on the issues that will define work for decades to come. This new online platform highlights research insights on the following five megatrends:

1. Longevity

2. Lifelong Learning

3. Income Inequality

4. Advances in Technology

5. Contingent Work
