Building Global Momentum for the Rights of Older Persons

AARP works across sectors, regions, and institutions to strengthen the global movement for older persons' rights. We bring together governments, civil society organizations, experts, and older persons themselves to advance shared goals, amplify collective impact, and help shape a more inclusive future.

While many organizations advocate for specific interests, AARP helps strengthen the ecosystem that drives lasting change. We invest in partnerships, support collaboration, share expertise, and create opportunities for diverse voices to work together. Through our engagement with the United Nations and partners around the world, we help build the relationships, knowledge, and momentum needed to advance the rights, dignity, and participation of older persons everywhere.

How We create Impact

Lasting change requires more than advocacy. It requires strong partnerships, informed stakeholders, and opportunities for collective action. AARP works to strengthen the ecosystem advancing the rights of older persons by connecting organizations, sharing expertise, convening stakeholders, and supporting participation in key international processes. Through our engagement at the United Nations and our partnerships around the world, we help build the foundations for sustained progress.

Key Areas of Global Engagement

AARP works with partners worldwide to advance practical solutions and long-term change for older persons. Our current areas of focus include:

Advancing a UN Convention on the Rights of Older Persons

Supporting governments, civil society, and older persons as the international community develops the first dedicated global human rights treaty on aging. (Show images of our group photos from the OEWG and IGWG, possibly link to some of our submissions to the UN, or our statements.

Supporting Meaningful Participation

Ensuring that older persons themselves are active participants in decisions affecting their lives and rights. (Highlight the work of GAROP and HelpAge, which have used our support to train and bring older persons to the UN.)

Strengthening Civil Society Collaboration

Helping partners coordinate advocacy, share knowledge, and develop common strategies across regions and sectors. (Show photos of us hosting civil society meetings in our space in New York, and leading GAROP's organizing work.)

Building Global Awareness of Ageing and Human Rights

Contributing expertise, thought leadership, and practical solutions that elevate the rights and dignity of older persons in international discussions. (We could highlight our CSW work here, as well as potentially cross-link with other areas of International's work, and link to the work we're supporting at Amnesty International.)
