A global model of community support could help Maine’s rural older adults
This opinion piece by Joy Barresi Saucier, executive director of the Aroostook Agency on Aging, and Noël Bonam, state director of AARP Maine, explores how a proven community support model from Vietnam could help rural Maine residents age well at home. The authors examine the success of Intergenerational Self-Help Clubs and highlight how community-driven solutions can strengthen social connections, improve well-being, and expand support for older adults in underserved areas. "We think this is the right moment to pilot ISHCs in Maine’s rural towns. With support from municipal leaders, local businesses, nonprofits, philanthropists, Age-Friendly Communities, and others, pilot programs can help Maine’s communities adapt the ISHC model to enable neighbors to lend a helping hand. "
